Qualifying for MATH 1225

General Information:

At Virginia Tech, we are committed to our students’ academic success. We place special emphasis on the success of incoming students in MATH 1225 (Calculus of a Single Variable), so that they get off to a good, positive start in their college career. 

There are three ways to earn eligibility to enroll in MATH 1225:

  1. earn a passing score (2023-24 Academic Year: 80 or higher) on a VT ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225/CHEM 1035
    - OR-  
  2. earn a qualifying grade (2023-24 Academic Year: C- or better) in MATH 1214
    - OR- 
  3. have a qualifying score on one of the following approved college level exams:
 Test 
 Required Score 
 AP Calculus AB 4 or 5
AP Calculus BC 3, 4, or 5
CLEP Calculus 64 - 80
IB Higher Level
Mathematics:
Analysis & Approaches 
Completion of the Certificate or Diploma
AND
5, 6, or 7

IMPORTANT: Your score must be reported to Virginia Tech and appear on your VT academic record in Hokie Spa

You have satisfied the prerequisites for MATH 1225. We encourage you to discuss your course plans with your academic advisor before enrolling in MATH 1225.

If you do NOT intend to take MATH 1225, no further action is needed.

There are three different ways you can earn a status of MATH 1225 - Eligible to enroll:  

  1. Earn a passing score (2023-24 Academic Year: 80 or higher) on a VT ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225/CHEM 1035. Read more information in the VT ALEKS Placement Assessment FAQs.
  2. Submit a qualifying score (see above) from an approved college level exam (e.g. AP, IBHL, CLEP).
  3. Earn a qualifying grade (2023-24 Academic Year: C- or better) in MATH 1214.

*Notes:

  • You CANNOT earn a status of 'MATH 1225 - Eligible to enroll' using a grade in an equivalent course (including, but not limited to MATH 1214, MATH 1225) taken at another institution.
  • A grade of B better in MATH 1014/1025/1536 earned AFTER Spring 2022 does not earn eligibility to enroll in MATH 1225.
  • You CANNOT earn a status of 'MATH 1225 - Eligible to enroll' using your score on a VT ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225/CHEM 1035  unless that score is 80 or higher.
  • If you want to take MATH 1225,
    • you must earn a passing score (2023-24 Academic Year: 80 or higher) on a VT ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225/CHEM 1035 (seats are subject to availability, so earn eligibility as soon as you are able to)
      - OR -
    • have a qualifying score on an approved AP/IB/CLEP exam
      - OR - 
    • earn a qualifiying grade (2023-24 Academic Year: C- or better) in MATH 1214.

Alternatively, if you have a qualifying college level exam score, you can self-report your score now.

IMPORTANT: If you self-report your score, you MUST have College Board send your score to VT as well. If there is a discrepancy on your Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), your offer of admission may be withdrawn.
