Dr. Estrella Johnson was awarded the Annie and John Selden Prize for Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. The award honors a researcher with a noteworthy record of publications in Mathematics Educations Research and who has been in the field for less than 10 years .

The prestigious honor, established by the Mathematics Association of America (MAA) in 2004, is awarded at most every other year and to just one researcher. Dr. Johnson is one of only nine recipients of the Prize and the first from Virginia Tech!

Dr. Johnson joined the Mathematics Department at Virginia Tech in 2013, right after earning her  PhD in Mathematics Education from Portland State University that same year. Her research "focuses on the pedagogical practices of mathematicians, with the goal of better understanding and supporting high quality, ambitious teaching in undergraduate mathematics classrooms." More recently, she has been investigating issues related to inclusion and diversity in both mathematics and science classrooms.

In addition to her position in the Mathematics Department, Dr. Johnson serves as the Director of Inclusion and Diversity in the College of Science at Virginia Tech.
