Travel Support for Faculty and Graduate Students
The Math Department can support faculty travel that meets the following three criteria:
- The trip must comply with University Policies and Procedures to be identified as professional travel.
- You must give a talk or poster presentation.
- You must confirm that other possible sources of funding have been sought and that these do not suffice to cover the cost of your travel.
Approval is subject to availability of funds and other factors. Application forms can be found on the department's intranet, under the Documents folder.
Faculty who are presenting a poster at a conference may request poster printing through the Department of Chemistry, with charges covered by the Department of Mathematics. See the link below for printing requirements, and contact Math Department fiscal tech staff for accounting of charges.
The Math Department encourages graduate students to engage in research, beginning as early as their first year in the program. Conference travel support, up to $1,000 per year, may be available for graduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Good standing in the department and making good progress toward degree (course grades, preliminary exams, research progress, GTA/GRA performance, participation in seminars);
- Giving a research presentation at a professional conference;
- Approval from your advisor, confirming that the conference and presentation support your academic goals, and confirming that external grant funds are not available to support this work;
- Evidence of attempts to seek funding from additional sources, such as the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS), the VT Math Circle (see link on right side of this page), or the VT Math Directed Reading Program.
To request travel support, please complete the request form, and ask your advisor to complete the advisor approval form. These forms can be found on the department's intranet, under the Documents folder.
