The rapidly evolving field of data science recognizes the urgent need for novel computational tools to overcome challenges of parameter inference and uncertainty quantification to ultimately make informed decisions. Emerging areas in data science such as machine learning, big data, and uncertainty quantification heavily rely on efficient computational methods.

Professor Chung's research, aim, and vision are to design novel computational inference and uncertainty estimation methods for mathematical models by synthesizing and combining methods newly developed in coexisting fields such as machine learning, surrogate modeling, uncertainty quantification, and inverse problems.

Professor Chung's research group follows a cross-disciplinary approach merging various computational techniques from different fields and applying these methods to a wide spectrum of areas such as medicine, biology, imaging, ecology, and the geosciences.
