Mathematical Career Opportunities
The first link in this section takes you to the AMS, MAA, SIAM Math Career Homepage. There are many successful mathematicians in many diverse areas profiled here in the archives of this site. It begins with a list of short professional descriptions, from which you can click and select a more complete description of what they have accomplished and what brought them to this point in their lives. If your tastes and talents tell you that you should be a mathematician, but you have been worried about the number and caliber of existing opportunities to do mathematics professionally, this site should make you feel very relieved. You may also want to show it to your parents in case they are also worried about mathematical career possibilities. You can then feel free to let your heart and your mind guide you into your future.
The second link in this section takes you to lists of companies that have hired BS mathematicians from Virginia Tech in the past four years. You can see the diversity there; from Big Six consulting firms to engineering firms, to actuarial or insurance firms, to all types of computing areas. Oh yes, we do have an excellent teacher-preparation program, too. Our alums tell us that they are very happy with the career opportunities that were woven into their curriculum and experiences at Virginia Tech. In fact, many of them have volunteered to provide information and guidance to our students as they make curricular choices at Tech, and as the students actually go out to look for their first professional employment.
Which of these mathematical careers interests you the most?
Note the diversity and quality of the jobs of our recent Virginia Tech Mathematics graduates.
