Text:An Introduction to Manifolds, by Loring Tu
Course Contents:This course is an introduction to smooth manifolds. (It will be followed in Spring 2017 by Math 6324, Differential/Riemannian Geometry.) I plan to cover most of the material in the text: the definitions of smooth manifolds and smooth maps, tangent vectors and covectors, the tangent bundle, vector fields, differential forms and the exterior derivative, integration on manifolds, and de Rham cohomology.
I will be assuming standard topological concepts from the beginning. If you haven't had Math 4324 (topology) or Math 4225-4226 (real analysis, which includes a good grounding in metric space topology) or their equivalents, you should contact me before signing up for the course.
