An Introduction to Manifolds, by Loring Tu

Course Contents:

This course is an introduction to smooth manifolds. (It will be followed in Spring 2017 by Math 6324, Differential/Riemannian Geometry.) I plan to cover most of the material in the text: the definitions of smooth manifolds and smooth maps, tangent vectors and covectors, the tangent bundle, vector fields, differential forms and the exterior derivative, integration on manifolds, and de Rham cohomology.

I will be assuming standard topological concepts from the beginning. If you haven't had Math 4324 (topology) or Math 4225-4226 (real analysis, which includes a good grounding in metric space topology) or their equivalents, you should contact me before signing up for the course.


Math 4324 or permission of the instructor


I will be assigning and collecting homework weekly. This will be the only formal work in the course.

For homework, you may consult books and class notes and you may discuss the problems with other people but the assignment you turn in must be the product of your own understanding of the material. As in many other mathematics courses this semester, class attendance will be taken daily. Attendance will not be used in determining grades, but may be kept for Mathematics Department records.


The course will be graded on a curve. However, 86% will be at least an A- and 70% will be at least a B-.
