    Research

  • Reduced-order modeling
Many scientific and engineering applications, such as weather prediction and flow control, require both accurate and efficient numerical simulations of turbulent flows. Within these applications, the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity model has played a dominant role in large eddy simulations (LES) over the years. This model has been developed around the idea of energy cascade and it has proven to be a valuable technique. On the other hand, reduced-order models emerge as computationally efficient methodologies in the calculation of turbulent flows. In these models, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is widely used. We present artificial viscosity Proper Orthogonal Decomposition models (AV-POD) that synthesize ideas stemming from LES and POD and give a thorough numerical analysis that is supported by extensive numerical experiments.
