Course Content:
Prerequisites:
The material covered in the following undergraduate
courses will be considered as prerequisite material.
Math
1114,
Math
2214,
Math 4564,
Math
4574.
If the student is
not familiar with the material in Math 4564 and Math 4574, then it is the
responsibility
of the student
to review the prerequisite material as they arise in Math 5495.
Students will
be expected to either possess or concurrently develop a facility with one
of the existing mathematical software packages (such as Matlab) so that
they can check their work.
Educational Objectives:
The objective of this two-semester course
offering is to develop the mathematical skills needed in graduate engineering
courses and to bring entering students with varied mathematical background to
a common level of proficiency.
The emphasis is on mathematical techniques and analysis. Constructive
proofs are included.
This
is a course outline. Some additional
references.
Attendance:
Attendance is required. Examples of valid excuses for
absences are: death
in family, illness, birth of a child, trip for conference presentation.
Excuses will not be granted for the following reasons: sleeping late, getting
drunk, exhaustion.
Assignments:
Homework and its collection time will be announced in class.
Random problems (roughly 10) will be graded.
Homework counts 40% of the total grade.
I encourage students to get help if necessary, and work
together to complete the homework on
time. No late homework will be accepted.
Quizzes:
Pre-announced quizzes (roughly 10) will be given:
these will include prerequisite material.
Quizzes will be graded and will count
40% of the final grade.
Final Exam, Grade:
A comprehensive closed book final exam will be
given and counts 20% of the final grade. You can bring
your notes and books.
All students must take the final examination.
This is a policy directive of the Dean
of Arts and Sciences and no exceptions can be made.
Letter grades and percentages: 90% guarantees at least an A-, 80% a B-,
70% a C-, 60% a D-, and below 50% is an F.
General:
I reserve the option of modifying these policies where appropriate as the
course develops.
