Title: Applications of branching rules to a question in classical invariant theory

Abstract

The talk will describe an effort to generalize a celebrated theorem of Kostant and Rallis. In the recent literature, this theorem is often cast in the context of invariant theory. The generalization we seek leads us to natural questions about invariants of the classical groups.

In joint work with Roger Howe and Eng Chye Tan we approach the classical instances of the problem using branching rules. The results of this program are combinatorial in nature as they involve the ubiquitous Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
