Title: Who is Teaching Mathematics to Virginia's middle school students?

Abstract

I will attempt to answer the question in the title of the presentation; discuss why the answer matters; comment on the CBMS report, The Mathematical Education of Teachers; and consider the responsibility of the college and university level Mathematics Departments in Virginia.

Bill Haver has been actively involved at VCU, in Virginia and nationally in efforts to improve the preparation of middle school mathematics teachers. He is currently Director of a FIPSE-supported effort of 10 Virginia colleges and universities, including VCU and Virginia Tech, to increase the number of well-qualified middle school mathematics teachers completing their degree programs.
