This course covers the calculus of functions whose domain
and/or range is multidimensional.
The topics covered will include both differential and integral
calculus of such functions:
differential operators, such as the divergence and curl,
integral operations, such as line integrals and surface integrals,
and variations of the fundamental theorem of calculus (which relates
differential calculus to integral calculus) such as Green's theorem,
Stokes' theorem, and the Divergence theorem.
MATH 2224.
Vector Calculus,
fifth edition, by Jerrold E. Marsden and Anthony J. Tromba.
There will be two in-class tests announced at least a
week in advance, and a comprehensive final exam.
The two tests will each count 20 % and the final exam will count 30 %.
There will be weekly homework assignments as well as quizzes
based on the homework problems and solved examples
in the textbook.
Selected, but unannounced, homework problems will be collected and
graded.
The homework assigments and quizzes will count 30 %.
A score of 90% will guarantee an A-, 80% a B-, 70% a C-, and 60% a D-.
December 14, 1:05pm - 3:05pm.
No make-up tests or homework assignments will be given.
If you miss a test for any reason, the percentage score of your
final exam grade will be substituted for the missed test.
If you do not miss any test, the percentage on the final exam
will replace your lowest test if it is to your benefit.
Students work on the in-class tests and final exam alone.
There will be NO books, notes, calculators, etc.
allowed on the exam.
The honor code applies to all graded work in this course.
The
Virginia Tech Honor System will be strictly enforced.
