“Tell me, and I forget . . .
Show me, and I remember . . .
Involve me, and I understand.”

Regarding My Teaching

My passion for teaching was sparked in Louisiana Tech University, as I was engaged in a series of teaching seminars led by Professor Turner, the source of the above quote, and we became true friends to each other. After that, I joined the Math Department at Virginia Tech, where I began to work closely with my students, peers and faculty mentors. Through these experiences, not only have I have formed my own arts and science in teaching, but also I have discovered the joy of sharing knowledge, discovery, and understanding with others.

Teaching energizes me, refines my thinking and brings a deep sense of satisfaction and meaning to my life. It is both awesome and humbling to realize what a positive impact I can have over the lives, the minds, and the futures of young people - what a great responsibility.

Teaching Experience

I have 6 years’ teaching experience consisting of service as, either a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech and Louisiana Tech University, or instructor for the school of engineering at Virginia Tech in summer 2005.

  • I have had full responsibility for instruction and grading in courses such as STEP Math, Calculus I and II, Calculus with Trigonometry.
  • I was the course coordinator with full responsibility for the online course of Calculus with Matrices in Summer 2007.
  • I took partial responsibility in teaching Vector Geometry recitation in Spring 2005.
  • I have taught Multi-variable Calculus, Introduction of Differential Equation and graduate level course Numerical Analysis, as temporary lecturer.
  • I was math tutor at Math Emporium of Virginia Tech 2004-2005.
  • In STEP math, I participated in designing the course, including the course content, textbook and course evaluation.

Teaching Interests

  • My teaching philosophy is to teach by involvement, to make my enthusiasm and love of math contagious not only from textbook and classroom, but into their lives.
  • Specific teaching interest in calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, numerical analysis, linear algebra, optimization, etc.
  • I would love to take up responsibility in student mentoring
  • Due to my extensive background in structural engineering and water resources engineering, I would love to teach calculus/numerical methods with engineering application
  • Due to my finance background, I would like to teach business math toward real application.
