Tutorial: Trapezoidal Rule

We continue by setting up a data table:

Step 2: Enter x and y values in a table

We continue with our approximation of the integral of f(x) = x2 on the interval from 2 to 8, with n = 5, and thus stepsize 1.2. We enter x and y values in columns:

A
B
C
D
1
x
f(x)

2
2.0
4

3
3.2
10.24

4
4.4
19.36

5
5.6
31.36

6
6.8
46.24

7
8.0
64

We entered x values in column A, and the formula =A2^2 in B2 and copied this down column B. Now we are ready to multiply by either 1 or 2 for each entry. Then multiply h/2 by the sum.
