Welcome to the SGTA Homepage!
This is the homepage of the Senior Graduate Teaching Assistants
(or SGTAs) of the
Math Department
at
Virginia Tech.
The SGTA position is designed to support teaching assistants with
the integration of their various duties (i.e. research, coursework
and teaching). We work closely with
Eileen Shugart,
the Teaching Assistant Coordinator.
The current SGTAs are:
Responsibilities
The biggest responsibility that the SGTAs have is to be a resource to
the other teaching assistants in the Math Department. So please drop
by our offices and ask us questions. If we don't know the answer, we
will try and direct you to someone that does.
In addition to being a general resource, the following projects and
services are some of the jobs that the SGTAs handle in support of the
teaching assistants in the department.
- Maintaining the GTA manual. The latest version can be found on the Intranet (under Resources on the
Math Department ).
- Collecting and organizing material for the
teaching file.
This is a great resource to draw from in preparing to teach classes.
- Coordinating the
peer mentoring program
for experienced GTAs in the department.
- Scheduling and running a series of
Graduate Issues Seminar
during the course of the academic year. Go to the
seminars page
to see what topics have been presented in the past, to see
a schedule for the current semester or to express an opinion
about a topic you would like to see presented on.
- Helping graduate students develop their own
web pages
for use in their classes. Follow this link for some example pages
and some links to pages to help you develop your own web page.
- Keeping a page of
Internet Resources
for graduate students. There is a lot here. Browse through and find something
interesting!
You can also read the official word on
what an SGTA is supposed to be.
