Since 1995, the Math Department at Virginia Tech has sponsored one or more public lectures that emphasize the role of mathematics in a variety of diverse fields such as biological sciences, engineering, and computer science.

The lecture usually relates to the theme for Math Awareness Month as stated by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). In addition to lectures, in past years, some additional presentations have included a book signing, a play, and a demonstration of CAVE technology.
